Traditional search returns a list of pages and lets the searcher choose. AI assistants do something different: they gather candidate content, choose the pieces that best support an answer, check them, and write a response with citations. Krishna Madhavan of Microsoft framed the distinction neatly at SEO Week 2026: SEO optimises for ranking pages, while generative optimisation is about being selected as evidence.
The same foundations, a different finish line
Both systems draw on the same search index, and both still rank content. The difference comes after ranking. A search results page shows links. An AI answer goes further: it selects passages, builds them into context, generates an answer constrained by that evidence, and may cross-check the draft before citing anything.
Ray Martinez of Archer Education estimated that most of what makes content eligible for AI answers is still classic SEO: crawlable, indexable, authoritative pages. The smaller remainder is about passage retrieval and citation. Teams that abandon SEO fundamentals to chase AI visibility tend to lose both.
One question becomes many
Before anything is retrieved, an AI system interprets the question, normalises it, rewrites it, and expands it into multiple variations covering different intents. A buyer asking for the best options in your category might trigger searches about reviews, pricing, specific use cases, and recent alternatives. Visibility is earned across that whole fan-out, not just the original wording.
The four gates every page has to pass
- Discoverable: crawlable URLs, a current sitemap, clean canonicals, and nothing blocking access.
- Parsable: semantic HTML, clear headings, structured data, and text that doesn't depend on heavy scripts to appear.
- Groundable: self-contained passages, clear sourcing, and no contradictory claims on the same page.
- Trustworthy: facts that match what other reputable sources say, from named experts, consistently over time.
Freshness is now an eligibility signal
Madhavan stressed that stale information is often filtered out before ranking even begins. Meaningful updates — not cosmetic date changes — keep content in contention. Protocols like IndexNow, which notify search engines the moment content is added, updated, or removed, help that freshness get noticed quickly.
What to do this quarter
- Audit your ten most important pages against the four gates.
- Check that key facts appear as text on the page, not only in images, PDFs, or tabs.
- Set a review cadence for service and product pages, and update them meaningfully.
- If you use Bing Webmaster Tools, review its AI performance reporting to see which pages are cited for which queries.
